Can someone PLEASE give me a detailed full summary of "At Bertram's Hotel" by Agatha Christie?
I’m doing a book report on it.
…It’s due tomorrow. I procrastinated and I can’t find help anywhere, please help me.
When Jane Marple comes up from the country for a holiday in London, she finds what she’s looking for at Bertram’s Hotel: a restored London hotel on Pond Street with traditional decor, impeccable service and an unmistakable atmosphere of danger behind the highly polished veneer. But what she does not realize is that a number of the people in the entrance hall alone are hiding secrets, all of which are about to become part of a violent chain of events set in motion when an absent-minded guest, Canon Pennyfather, makes his way to the airport on the wrong day. He later returns to his hotel very late at night and upon his return to his room is knocked out. He then disappears for a time until he is located in a house, where he is being nursed back to health after supposedly suffering a car accident, quite a distance from Bertram’s hotel. On the same night as that of his disappearance, someone looking like him is seen at a train robbery.
Later, in the dead of night, as Elvira Blake walks back to Bertram’s hotel, someone attempts to shoot her. The person tries again, but this time Michael Gorman is shot accidentally. After the police become involved, Elvira says that she had similar brushes with death when she was in Italy.
Eventually, it transpires that Michael Gorman was shot with Ladislaus Malinowski’s gun by Elvira Blake, who stole the gun from Malinowski’s car. She shot Gorman as she discovered that he was married to her mother and she thinks that this marriage voids her mother’s union with Elvira’s father, meaning that she will not receive anything from her father’s will. Bess Sedgwick, however, claims responsibility for the shooting, just before she kills herself in an attempt to escape. Bess Sedgwick organized the robberies using Bertram’s Hotel as a respectable cover. But it is later revealed that Elvira Blake was responsible for the murder of Michael Gorman. Elvira had fallen madly in love with Ladislaus Malinowski and knew that he was primarily interested in her money, but was concerned that if Michael Gorman revealed his marriage to Bess Sedgwick it would endanger her father’s legacy.

Miss Marple decides to take a trip to London, and stays at an ‘old fashioned’ hotel called Bertram’s that she used to stay at when she was young. She sees an old friend there, and starts chatting with her. Her friend seems to think that a lot of the guests there look a lot like well- known people, but they are not. Meanwhile, Canon Pennyfather, who is very absentminded, is trying to take a plane, but realizes he is a day behind. He later returns to the hotel extremely late, but disappears. Later he is seen at a random house being nursed back to health after supposedly being in a car accident.
Elvira Blake is walking along the street during a foggy time of day. Someone tries to shoot her, but misses. Again that person tries, but instead shoots Michael Gorman who gets killed. When the police question Ms. Blake, she says people have tried to kill her before in Italy.
Eventually, the police with a lot of help from Miss Marple figure out that it was actually Elvira Blake who shot Gorman because he was married to her mother, and in doing so nullifies Elvira’s part of money from her biological fathers will. Bess Sedgwick, Miss Blake’s mother, is found to be using Bertram’s as a place to organize huge crimes with the help of the staff. She takes responsibility for killing Gorman, but kills herself before she could escape. Elvira killed Gorman because she was in love with a famous race car driver who was only interested in the money she would receive from her fathers will. Elvira thought that Gorman’s marriage to her mom would cancel the transaction.
Hopes this helps!
